Woolf is relentless in this scene. Showed us a glimpse of what once was, perhaps what could’ve been, and ripped it apart in the span of two pages. It is a sorrowing tragedy, but perhaps realistic and necessary to depict in such way for her time. I think he was doomed from the start, never to recover, but that question always lingers on and the doubt cuts deeper than any other ending could. Idk what else awaits here

Woolf’s modernist style was surprising in the first few pages. Rather difficult, I may even say, to understand. But at a certain point it just clicked. The way she fluently goes from point of view to another, from past to present, from dream to reality. It’s hypnotic. Even at only 66 pages, I find myself deeply engaged with Rezia’s pain, Peter’s yearning and interested in who this Clarissa really is.

I’m starting to not like this. I’ve indulged in this happy moment, but I have the feeling something extremely bad is about to happen. Why wasn’t there any guns, but a whole lot of ammo in that bunker?

“What would you like for supper?” Asked the man. This gamble the father took not only meant survival, but restoring the faith of the child too. It paid beautifully and when he asks this, possibly for the first time, he is able to give his son options for food, not only sustenance, but to savor. Such a normal thing for us, becomes a beautifully written scene, that gives hope in an otherwise doomed world
