The first story had me hooked immediately but I’m kinda confused by the ending. Did Adaoma fake her death bc she felt bad seeing Fodo at the market or was Fodo hallucinating orrrrr… anyway still very engagingly written and excited to read the rest of the stories

I’m really liking this so far. Obviously I’m not a black woman but I feel like it offers an honest look into black American culture in the 90s and now, especially through the lens of a cosmopolitan, Carrie-Bradshaw-esque woman. It’s written so conversationally, so smooth, it’s like talking to a friend. Excited to read more!

Shit’s getting real

Okay I gave in and bought this (was actually recommended to me through Goodreads). Only read chapter 1 and so far I’m engaged, invested, nervous and exposed. I know the other shoe is going to drop and things are going to get worse and worse but at this point in the book it’s like just a hint of something scarier to come. Great book for suffering through my period tbh

Just got started on this and it’s exactly the kind of book I was looking for to jumpstart my urge to read for pleasure again. Although from the cover and first couple pages I assumed this would be light-hearted chick lit, it’s already giving me an undercurrent of darkness and trauma that I think really enriches the otherwise very feel-good writing style and imagery. Already relatable.Excited to see where it goes!

Inching along at a snail’s pace… but I liked this bite sized portion a lot. Really relate to Asian Americans being seen as foreigners no matter how American they are (and definitely brings back a lot of memories). It’s so hard to find the time and energy to read while being a full time teacher. I suddenly got the urge to pick this back up in between my mountain of chores and decided to jump on the rare opportunity. I need to remind myself to read for pleasure, but it’s hard when I have to read so much for work 🥲

Wow this chapter hit hard. As I’m in therapy now I’m learning all the ways my PTSD has manifested, especially because I refused to acknowledge my own trauma for so long. I’m so thankful my parents are increasingly more open to discussions about mental health

Seriously devouring this. The chapters are so short and it’s very engaging. Just got to part 3, probably gonna finish by tomorrow. Pretty good so far, love the creepiness and the mystery element. But damn I don’t want to become old
