McFadden loves to play with perception and unreliable narrators. No one is quite what they seem with this author! She loves to mislead you by playing with the anxieties and misconceptions of her characters. This book is giving Misery, but with an even darker twist than infatuation. Polly is complicated, sometimes I feel bad for her, sometimes I am disgusted by her or afraid of her. Like how Tegan feels about her!

This book is giving Misery! I was immediately hooked by the main character’s predicament and love that the setting is causing as many problems as the people. This girl has so many obstacles coming at her at once, I’d have gone into labor for sure. Something is definitely weird about the couple that rescued her, where did this guy come from so fast? And why do they have a random hospital bed in their basement?

Need to explore the multimedia component of the book, recovered footage etc

Need to read Mister Tender’s Girl to understand the Alice cameo and why Poe and Alice meeting in the same universe is special

Wow what a wild ride! This book gets twisty, dark, and the world/house becomes a character of its own. Very House of Leaves, I like that the characters compare it to a video game. I have so many questions about the nature of this reality, if we’re dealing with technology, parallel universe, bad drug trip, or what. Lore gets better, she’s at least a very clever character who will likely save them all in the end.

So far, I am enjoying the writing style. Lots of vivid imagery, the author lingers just long enough for me to really wrap my head around the details of a place or a person before pushing the plot along.

I find Lore to be an obnoxious character whose wokeness is clearly overdone. She’s a caricature of a non-conforming women, while the men all seem much more believable. Female characters are hard to do well.
