I hate the tone of this book. I hate the MC's inner dialogue. The first paragraph disappointed me. I eventually skipped forward a few chapters, hoping the plot would at least be interesting. But everything is explained like we're in elementary school. No, this book is not for me. Books, gardening, and romcom? I wanted exactly that when I checked this out. But it is not for me. I can't stand another minute of it.

Kind of hate the writing style.

I love this book. I have two main problems so far. (1) There are subtle and small but baffling plot holes. Why would X result in Y in one chapter but not another, for example? (2) What is romantic about sex with someone who was just neglected in a squalid prison for a month and hasn't had a bath, food, good sleep...?

Disappointed, unfortunately. But may be worth the limited time investment.

I'm a little confused how MC can have traveled to the "forgotten corners" of rural Europe and Russia, but never have needed to start her own fire. But I'm willing to suspend my disbelief for now and go along with it.

If being a dick to women and "more comfortable in the company of men" is code for gay in this book ------ *misogyny*

I have been so looking forward to this. So far... depressingly disappointing. It's so bad at characterization, and I find the changes to the story confusing. I just realized it's part of a larger project of classic retellings--so not just a passion project. My hopes are lower.

Dense. Read this on a 12 hr flight and back and still not done. But good.

There's one line about Asperger's and ADD on pg 247 that doesn't make sense to me, and I think it reveals Tatar's ignorance about both, so I wish it's been edited out--it doesn't add to her analysis but also doesn't detract because it's not particularly relevant.

Disappointed. I don't think it's much worse than the first book, really, I just don't have patience for some of the choices made.

One, most importantly, is that our MC is an ex-slave and an abuse victim. Her partner's rage should terrify her--she's much too understanding and supportive of his "big boy feelings." Max needs to grow up.

I loved the premise, but it's moving very slowly. I also don't really care about these characters. Not sure why.

The writing is only okay.

Wow. Took the second chapter to sell me on it, but into the third now and loving it. I hope the characters get even more interesting.

This was recommended. But I'm not liking the approach. Maybe the basic groundwork will transition to something worth reading.
