Only on chapter 2 and I need to take a break. The vile racism shown in the story is already painful to read. I’ll keep going, because it’s absolutely something we should not close our eyes to, but it’s heart-wrenching to think about the things the shaves went through. To not be seen as a person, but as a thing to be owned and sold at will would be devastating.

I feel like it’s taking quite a long while to set up this story. I’m going to keep hanging on, though some parts so far have been drier than burnt toast.

So many passages of the first 49 sonnets I’ve read and studied have touched me. To choose a favorite line is nigh impossible, but I really enjoyed this:

“When most I wink, then do mine eyes best see, For all the day they view things unrespected, But when I sleep, in dreams they look on thee, And darkly bright, are bright in dark directed. Then thou, whose shadow shadows doth make bright…”
