Finally got around to starting this book I'd had for months, and someone else put it on hold at the library 🤦‍♀️

Needed something to read on a trip. For some reason this was in the shared kindle library and it offered hints of WWII spy drama

Is this going to end tragically for all the main characters? I fear it is. WW2 after all.

I thought I'd read all the previous Thursday Murder Club books, but there are references to plot elements in the previous book that are totally foreign to me so I guess I didn't. That one has a long wait list at my library so I'll soldier on and hope #3 won't be spoiled by going out of order!

Don’t remember exactly why I requested this book, and I’m having a hard time getting into it. Have to return to library due to someone else’s hold; not sure if I’ll get it again to finish it…

(I think I learned about this book bc of the night watchman chapter? Went on a city tour with a night watchman re-enactor in Ribe DK this summer)

I'd originally requested this as audiobook via Libby. Recently noticed it wasn't in my holds and was no longer available as an audiobook - probably due to those onerous restrictions the publishers put on library digital audiobooks. ☹️ I know it would've been better read by author but the content is interesting anyway.

This is clearly going to be a story where the characters are on a collision course. With a redemption arc as well.

The Clergyman's Daughter / The Red House was a good one. The Unbreakable Alibi was super obvious (and why didn't they pick up on tea / coffee mismatch?)

These are short stories (after all, they promise 1 day detecting service!). And I suspect they would be more amusing if I knew all the other detectives that are referenced

The writing style is very different - is that because of when it was written (1927) or is this style common in some mystery sub-genre that I don't often read??

Just had a surreal experience. This sweeping, epic, multi-generational novel set in India name-drops medical missionary Ida Scudder who founded the medical school where current MC will be doing neurosurgery residency. I know one of Ida Scudder's descendants. Actually, I know 4 to 6 of them (do wives count? not in bloodline so...), but only 1 (or 2?) really well. Small world!!
