This translation is very readable so far. I am especially enjoying the poetry. I may like to memorize some of it. In the first book we find Boethius writing poetry and lamenting his imprisonment. Lady Philosophy arrives and banishes the muses, who cannot offer true comfort, and begins diagnosing Boethius’ sickness.

Wow, does part one end with a bang! Morrison has drawn out the richness of her opening scenes without throwing any of it away! I want to think a little bit more on what she is doing with Jack and the Beanstalk. I’m also curious whether I should be thinking of The Man Who Was Thursday when she writes about the Seven Days.

More linearly told than Beloved. More focused on a male perspective without neglecting female perspectives.

In the first canto of this second book, just as in the first, we can tell that our knight has not yet mastered temperance. He nearly fights the Redcrosse knight based on the false claims of Archimago and Duessa. His traveling companion, an aged palmer, needs to give him a lot of guidance on the way. A rash temper and
ready zeal for justice may be part of what he must learn to temper.
