Did all sci-fi writers believe we would still be smoking indoors 100 years from now?

Good ideas in this book, too bad it's nestled inside a bunch of yap. Blah blah blah blah blah. Way too many words.

I have no idea what's going on.

This book is very blocky. Kind of have to skim to get through anything in a timely manner, but I get the gist.

Why is it always Robinson Crusoe? Whenever a book from outside the US mentions a specific English book they read, they always put Robinson Crusoe. I swear there have to be better books!

If you were over the age of 40 and had money, no male relatives, or were unable to have children, you were absolutely cooked. How dare women.

I'm annoyed that Krakauer is trying to argue with people that McCandless wasn't wrong in his actions. How do you look at the outcome of his story and then say, "his actions were NOT questionable in any way?"

Krakauer is really making that stretch about his father and Chris's. Stick to Mr. McCandless and this book would be 20 pages shorter and probably just as good.

So not only was he stupid, he was unoriginal

Okay now I realize why the logic behind the chalk magic sounds so familiar. It’s the exact same reasoning Kuang had behind the silver magic in Babel. The idea that contradictions create room for a kind of energy that surpasses physical boundaries. Cool, but kind of lazy?

This book is very long. It’s good, I am just really having a hard time with it and I don’t know why. I kind of think it’s because nothing is really happening. They’re going through hell, but nothing is really coming from any of their actions. They haven’t gotten any closer to their goal, and it’s kind of starting to lose me.

Apparently it’s actually pronounced
[kuh-tah-bah-sis] and not [cat-uh-bay-sis]
…whoops

I would be more sad if Ox hadn’t done this same charade 3 books ago. It’s getting old, buddy.

I’m sorry, but if you have your characters cry every other page it really dulls the emotional effect. In fact, now I’m just getting annoyed. Men are emotional, yes, but nobody is THIS emotional.

They turned him emo

TJ Klune took that “Ox is Jesus” symbolism and RAN with it

Thomas is haunting this narrative like a dead wife. Is this a Hamlet reference?

The werewolves will now discover the magic that is DayQuil

New petition for best chapter in a book right here

On the back of the cover it says this book falls into the genre of “Fantasy & Horror” and I thought that made no sense. I understand it now.

Hold on, I recognize this plot line… but where have I seen it before…

This book has just become a list of all the women Val Kilmer has met. Jesus Christ man I care about YOU not all these women. If I wanted to learn about them, I’d read their autobiographies.

This is compelling me to religion, and I don’t know how to feel about that

Oh, Val… I’m already wooed

I’m halfway-ish and I fear that this book is already not long enough. It moves quick, but also so slowly that I don’t think the 250ish pages I have left is gonna cover everything I need it to.

I’m surprised everyone in this book hasn’t just kissed each other yet

Big Donna Tartt vibes from this one

Characters so far are an asshole, a baby, and a pirate. Awesome.

Dorian is deep in that shit. He’s so fuckin cooked.

I’m directing my distaste of Dzhuliya towards my love of Yves. He should be with me.
