There is a lot of palpable characterization in John McGahern’s ‘Amongst Women’ that is discoverable in its short length thus far. The family in the story feels like a family you’ve met or been a part of in your life. I’m sure a lot of people (myself included) can relate to the unspoken and dysfunctional dynamics of an emotionally absent, patriarchal family that emphasizes control through domestic tyranny.
