Lovely sibling relationships in this book though

It is unfortunate that Bastian is such a cardboard cutout of a villain — no dimension, no subtlety, no grey area, just flat Disney villain — only without the funny lines.
It’s so sad because he could have been such an interesting character and added so much with the reluctant attraction but alas *sigh*

This doesn’t really make sense — or if it does, it’s not well explained — if this illness makes people turn to stone and they die when their bodies can no longer function normally because internal organs have turned to stone, why are we talking about dissection and salvaging organs for science? Hasn’t it all turned to stone??

No. Absolutely not. I cannot possibly get through this, it is absolutely abysmal. I do however want to know about a couple of characters so there will be some very heavy skimming and selective listening going on.

These characters and story should be compelling on paper but somehow they are not, even with a decently narrated audiobook. I don’t quite get it. Maybe because the dialogue is so flat? I don’t know. But I have only just come out of a slump so I do not have the trust or patience to continue this and see if it pays off.

I have less than 100 pages left and when I tell you I’m on the edge of my seat, I am not exaggerating in the least

Not me spending 15 minutes looking back through the book to find where it talked about Yasila escaping the Dragons… only to find out we had not yet heard of it and the story is being told only now 😑

There are so many good characters in this book, it’s crazy 💜

Rats! There is a trope I don’t like. But I’ll keep reading because I am quite enjoying the rest of the book and I really like the main character!

This book’s writing style is quite different from what I expected — in a good way

I honestly expected this book to have drawn me in by now, and it unfortunately has not.

I think there’s way too much body horror in this for me

I am not vibing with this book at all, unfortunately.

I am bored, I find the story repetitive and the characters kind of flat so far, and I have zero interest in finding out what the mystery is, so this is a DNF.

Pity, because the premise was great!
