Clearly I wasn't devastated enough by The Fault in Our Stars. 😭

But also, considering it was my dad's birthday recently, and he's no longer here, it feels like a fitting time to read a book like this. I expect to be destroyed.

It feels so rewarding to recognize certain references to previous conversations, like Augustus telling Hazel he loves her, even knowing that that "there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust."

This is referencing something Hazel said when they first met in the support group, BUT ALSO Hazel says that everything will be "for nothing."

Augustus never says anything about this being "for nothing."

TITLE SPOTTED

REALLY love the detail of Hazel referring to herself as a "grenade." It doesn't just feel like a random metaphor; it's an object-of-destruction she could associate with Augustus playing The Price of Dawn (very war-stricken, sci-fi game. He even dies by putting himself over a grenade in the game, which COULD ALSO BE METAPHORICAL OMG).

In some way, it shows that she still has him in the back of her mind indirectly.

"If we'd put them in a vase in the living room, they would have been everyone's flowers. I wanted them to be my flowers."

I have no idea how this happened, but this book has declined so rapidly in quality 😭

Actually, I just realized something.

The cover of this book is a LIE. There weren't any brooms in this.

I genuinely think that the very beginning of the book ruins this. Of course the tarot card reading was going to be wrong. It makes the rest of this book feel very predictable, and you're just waiting for Lily to have that moment where she's like, "Maybe my divination was wrong all along. It didn't want me to get with Luke, it wanted me to get with Chrys."

If I had a nickel for every piece of media I have consumed this week where a character goes through a tarot card reading and the fourth card they pulled ended up specifically being "death," I'd have two nickels.

I don't like the word "yummy"

this book is driving me crazy

There is not a SINGLE serious conversation in this book where someone isn't drunk or high or both.

Don't expect me to take your manipulative, asshole, guy character seriously if you have him saying dumb shit like "Nooo don't put the lotion on me, it's pink!!!"

At that point, I don't see him as an actual person; I see him as a cartoon character.
