What's even funnier is that when Amy hears the explanation, she literally says "Who would do something like that?" It's almost as if McFadden unintentionally acknowledges how ridiculous it all sounds. Just another weak point when it comes to the plot.

The idea that he'd pretend to be a patient just to cover a story is so absurd that I can't buy it for a second. Even the most passionate, career driven journalist wouldn't go to those lengths. It makes the story lose its credibility.

Almost 200 pages in. The Master has finally become part of the story. I loved that his fear stemmed from Soviet censorship and the harsh criticism of his book knowing that The Master and Margarita itself wasn't published during Bulgakov's lifetime makes that even more ironic. It reminds me of current state of my country where many artists are scared of expressing their opinions openly because of the autocracy.

The ending of chapter 7 is just a kid dreaming, wishing she's important and it's chilling to read something so raw and real.

Why do I get the feeling that Briony from Atonement and Merricat would be best friends but one of them would probably end up killing the other?

I love how the fences represent both the family’s isolation and the villagers’ perception that the Blackwoods see themselves as above everyone else. Great symbolism for setting the atmosphere.

Not to diagnose her or anything but she sounds like she has OCD or definitely a need to control things in her ways.

I totally get how being cut off from everyone, not just on your own but as a whole family, can mess with your head and make you paranoid. The way Merricat’s eighteen but acts and thinks like she’s eight really shows how isolation can stunt your growth.

What’s even more amazing is that the author can convey all of this in just fifteen pages. I already liked this book.
