A Low Nicole is starting Claim (Pretty Poison #3)
Damn…I’m already pondering literary grade themes here. CF White has been brewing them since the beginning and they hit you on the face starting this book? Who are when if we’ve been bound by economics and dependency to those more powerful than we are? How do we step into ourselves? Is privilege the only way we can do so?

I’m in a bit of a romance slump and can’t seem to finish anything. I love usually love Isabel Murray’s light hearted rom-com’s, but this one starts super heavy on the smut immediately after one of the MCs breaks the other MCs heart. The brokenhearted MC then has to have sex with the third MC because omegaverse heat rules with no resolution to said broken heart. Not really feeling that dynamic.

Anyone else have issue with the fact that the two MCs are either a) biracial (Lachlan is half Chinese) or b) firmly middle aged (40s-50s is the given range for Tim) and that the cover has someone who represents neither of those demographics???

Also not buying that you wouldn’t recognize a kid you helped learn how to surf years later. But then, I’m a face person and can often recognize people easily.

It says something really important about Western European culture that the goal of philosophy is to try to define an objectivity so true that it is beyond fault.

“As easily, then, as men are taken in by any kind of superstition, it is just as difficult to make them stand firm in one and the same superstition. Indeed, because the common people always remain equally wretched, they are never satisfied for long, but are most pleased by what is new, and has not yet deceived them.”

Hmmmm….not sure about this one. I love Lily Mayne even at her goofiest, and so far I’m not into it. I’ve also been sick and doing nothing but watching cult documentaries so I might just be a little off for the moment and need some time to recalibrate.

What happened to the classy cover that’s featured here in GR??? The KU cover features a sleezy Portland hipster with his own hair care product line….ugh. Just because I love reading romance doesn’t mean I want to stare at someone else’s definition of eye candy.

I’m struggling here. There’s some elements I love—a working class, semi rural setting, a himbo MC—but something about the tone isn’t working for me. There’s a vacillation between soft-hearted-ness and attempts at angsty conflict that just feels weird. I stalled out on an “I’m too broken for him!” scene that was just kinda…soppy. Not sure if it’s worth continuing.

I kinda feel like an asshole for for not really being into this book. I want to like it more than I do, but TBH, I’m tempted to DNF.

Katee Roberts writes soap operas. That’s what I’ve come to. Contrary to the uninformed perspective, romance can have full, robust world building and character development…and it can have cardboard sets and melodramatic OTT characters and plots. This is what Olympus is, and I want to get back into it because it was so fun when I was, but I’m struggling.

I devoured this series when I was sick a couple months ago, reading multiple books a day, and then waited for the library copy of this latest installment. I can’t seem to get into this one, and I’m not sure if I just lost momentum or if my initial enthusiasm as in part due to being sick. I don’t give romances much time before I DNF, but I’m giving this one more due to this question.

In the post-Freudian branch of psychodynamic/psychoanalytic theory, Stolorow found a way forward that I can get behind, leaning instead on existentialism, phenomenology and attachment research as a foundation. Written with the density of a philosophical text, it’s been slow going, though.

“Value alternately takes on and sheds the money-form and commodity-form, maintaining itself as it goes back and forth between them and expanding all the while. As the dominant subject of this process, value needs, above all, and independent form that can affirm its self-identity. Money alone can give value such as form.”

Had to read something intellectually cleansing after that horrible Katee Roberts Vampire Queen book. I’m so grateful that this book exists and for Dr Jacobs’s scholarship. Her textual analysis of Sera Khandro’s autobiography gives such a crazy insightful window into what life as a woman in Tibetan Buddhist culture. This is a gift to all American practitioners to gain more context about Vajrayana Buddhism.
