I’m enjoying this! The storyline moves quickly and tracks from land to sea and back again. Small clues of grief, loss and death anxiety are integrated well. Birds, a professor and the yearning for a lost mother. Poetry enters briefly in places is lovely!

I’m enjoying this already even though birds and the arctic zone and climate change hold little interest. There is already meaningful depth in the central character Frannie and the author is building intrigue quickly - only 2 chapters in! Hooray!

I’m enjoying this very much and need to crave out some extended reading time rather than bite size sessions. He has just narrated on the extent of prolonged violence on the Mediterranean coast.

This is engaging and beautifully written. I love the small bite like chapters and how they move from narrative storylines about family and descriptive passages about language and culture. The pace is good.

Wow 🤩 Greg Madison’s chapter was written so exquisitely! Some very useful ideas for self and students.

Great so far! Some of Spinelli’s writing seems to make ideas more complex than they need to be or perhaps it is because the ideas are genuinely aligned with my worldview anyway that they don’t need so much scaffolding?

Yes it’s already good. The scene I set. Locke crisp descriptions. Maman has died and been buried. The boss appears one of those control types. Sunday is over. He observes nothing much has changed. There is a soft urgency though about something!

Thank god and what a very mediocre ending! Angus and the sea was too predictable. I’m not left wondering what happens next..an exhausting read for little value in the end for me.

Have to get up and ready for BTG. So close to putting this book back in the bookcase now. It’s lost its lofty crisis moments and the author is moving towards a philosophical and/or sad ending…he is at the waterfall place where his dad died.

Wow! A lot packet now, and dam of if I don’t have to get up and have a shower and get ready for a 9 am session. Right at the point of fast forward falling down the cliff at the waterfall!

More enjoyment reading the last passage. Sadness is very much the vibe. They went to reclaim Emmy from whatever hell that was and DC returned to his blue angel to a bath of blood and pregnancy loss - perhaps.

He’s moved in with Dori after Vesper died and he’s drawing comics with Tommy who seems to be working at some newspaper doing ads. Angus was angry at his grandmother for no longer funding his education. I can sense I’m a mission to finish this now!

It’s always better to have a longer reading stint to feel more immersed in the story. DC almost got to the beach but Fast Forward had his way and they returned. DC is just being summonsed back to Coach’s house. The drug addiction is well and truly in control now sadly. Some good passages about the plight of being born into a tough beginning contrasted with those that have more life choices despite some things…

I suspect we are finally about to start the more engaging story! That last passage about partying and girls and mates and cool and dope was as boring as hell but chapter 41 opens with “Where does the road to ruin start?” Ughhh leaving it there this morning. I’m not waiting with bated breath though!

I think we have finally finished childhood now! Chapter 38 is next. I’m more interested in Angus than Demon at this stage. She has just driven them somewhere back to her childhood family home and Demon is reminiscing on his childhood. Ho hum…trying to stay with it!

Painstaking.
I don’t know if I’m not interested in this slow to develop story or I’m just preoccupied with other thoughts that really intrude while reading. Ho hum…first book I may not finish for book club because I can’t find anything to keep me in the story!!

Just told by Coach he’s going to put him into football. Yawn…I’m now quite bored with this book!

DC has just visited Peggots. Kent the new character saying aunt June.

He’s now twelve and left grandmothers to live in the “castle” with Angus and the football coach dad. They’ve done a credit card air bike shop and that’s about it!

Scene at the road garage with the old lady taking his money :( and he is off to find his grandmother, hitch hiking.

Slowly but surely. Not a lot happening. He is now with his new foster family who are poor. The camera in the dog annex was disconcerting.

The mum has died…not much else to report. The writing is engaging.

It’s okayish! Nothing much happening though. Just a ten yo kid having bf a hard start to life!

For some odd reason it reminds me of- well the themes do - of Lola and the mirror which I didn’t love. The writing is much better though. Made me wonder which book was published first!

It’s growing on me…
