Well, third third act was ~interesting~, but also lackluster. It put our characters in a position I didn't expect, but it lacked the courage to make any genuine social commentary typical of a dystopian novel. It ended in a weird spot but I'm not really sure what sort of ending would have satisfied me. Something with a but more punch, a bit more reflection for the audience. Overall, 3.5 stars.

As expected, I did not expect Part 2 to go the way that it did! Wow! Onto Part 3 then. This will be, purely out of speculation, the most interesting and formative part of the novel.

Just finished Part 1, cool setup. Interested in how future interactions with the Others will go. It's introduced an extreme version of the socio-economic issues of climate migration, so I can't anticipate the upcoming conflict and resolution.

Engaging premise, easy flow. The narrator's own voice, especially to himself, is very interesting. Curious to see how his frame of reference/worldview changes over time, especially as he has already referenced impactful things to come.

This is such a disappointment. Needlessly slow and meandering in the most tedious and frustrating way. Way too many characters for no reason other than stretching out what is already a pretty basic premise. Googled the ending and I'm just going to stop reading. A waste of a read, in my humble opinion.

Well. The differences between the classes are well done. The mystery itself, though, is so bland and uninteresting. The pacing is so poor and there’s like a million characters and no real breadcrumbs to follow, so I often find myself rushing through the chapters I can already tell are just filler. I foresee this getting about 3 stars.

Pacing is a bit all over the place, but still compelling enough. “Just fine” for the book overall right now tbh.

So far so good. The prose is deceptively comfortable, and I enjoy the subtle violence lurking under the surface of most descriptions.

Questions so far:
- What is poor Robin’s real name? :( Will we ever hear it?
- What additional students other than Ramy grew up under similar circumstances? Is this some kind of giant, disturbing, organized plan for increased international control and colonization?
- How many other children does Lovell have?
- What’s really going on with the silver bars?
I’m ~10% in but I deeply enjoy it all so far.

Just finished Part 1. Oh, my heart. How painfully familiar some of these practices echo in the news these days.

A heavy, compelling, and carefully crafted introduction. I’m very curious how the rest of the book balances the author’s personal experiences, political theory, and global history.
