Slow start, good characters, kinda clunky. Feels a little over-invented and tonally confused. Not bad

Stephenson is so thoroughly imaginative that it can be exhausting. As one review put it "It’s not possible to separate the essential from the decorative." So good so far, even if it has had some slow bits.

There are interesting things happening, and I love magic realism, but something is just off about his portrayal of women. They are reduced to sexual objects, awkward lolita-like “muses” or oracles who exist only to serve the lonely and lost man. There isn’t a single character I like except maybe Mr. Honda and the cat.

I need a fun, easy read.

This book is destroying me. It’s fantastic.
