Be open to “other” to live in harmony. “there are stores in this world…of civilizations…fallen because they could not…recognize a world[(s)] beyond themselves…so limited in thinking…they were happy to be subjugated to the slim imagination of a few, if only it offered them safety in a world too big…to comprehend. …it is not for us to understand the vastness of the world [just] our place in it.“

Started reading about a decade ago and stopped halfway through. Unsure if I’ll finish. It’s a biased account.

So far, I’m concerned with Orwell’s portrayal of women. Hoping this turns into a critique. Also, so far, I see this book as less relevant in current times than books like Handmaid’s Tale which show how easy it is for a democratic society to slip into totalitarianism rather than a society that was simply taken over militaristically. Don’t get taken over isn’t as valuable a lesson as don’t slip into it.
