He just let life pass by.. he lost and lost. His affair was when he was the happiest and he lost that too. Upsetting to know that his character was weak and never stood up for anything of his personal life other than his teaching.

W. Stoner and Edith Stoner married with W. Stoner expectation of living a happily healthy life with her. Turned out to be the biggest mistake. Both figure out marriage is a big failure a month in. They stay together but William ends up having most of the responsibilities including their child( Edith thought a child would help there marriage).
