I know this is a nobody criticizing a professor and author (as well as classic Russian literature) but I really don't agree with his statements about the first two stories. He asserts that the purpose of a scene is to make you think that exactly the opposite of what I thought was happening was happening (wow great writing cache. I appreciate your amazing literary criticism🙄)

The voice effects they use make this book really hard to understand. I get that they want it to be "dramatized" but I really just want somebody to read the words to me.

I keep almost dnfing this book and then not doing it ... I had similar feelings with Anathem but they went away after about 40% through the book when things started to pick up. This book has not given me any real reason to keep going... And I still have 15 hours left on the audiobook.

I've gotten really good at recognizing the 50% mark of books just by what's happening in the story. Unfortunately this does not help with my own writing in any way shape or form.

This book keeps almost being interesting. With his other books I at least felt the desire to know what was happening. I don't even know what I'm supposed to want to know... Nothing is happening. And it's taking so goddamn long.

Neal Stephenson is a perfectly insufferable math nerd which makes for good sci-fi and speculative fiction. He also seems to be a not so perfectly insufferable libertarian which is hit or miss. Very odd point of view I don't get very often outside of my one coworker as he's very anti-liberal but also a staunch atheist. That could all be false but it's the impression I get from reading 2 going on 3 of his books

Omg the Gregorian chanting on the audio book is awful holy shit

I'm enjoying this book a lot. It's set primarily in Houston which is really odd as somebody who has lived most of my life there. He gets a lot of things spot on but it's clear he isn't too familiar with the area cause they just be flying across the city from Sugarland to clear lake in no goddamn time lmao

This book was recommended by a YouTube channel that made it seem like it would be a cosmic horror sci-fi novel and it absolutely is not... However, what it is happens to be a really well written sci-fi novel with excellent world building.
I think maybe I should have not listened to the YouTuber who also said you don't need to read the first book because I was a little lost at first but I'm enjoying it now

This is such a good book. I liked Dhalgren even tho it was a bit fucked up but this book is actually just so much more my speed. I'm gonna have to go read all of his other books now.

My currently reading is a bit much rn but that's because several of my audiobooks were returned to the library before I could finish them and now I have to wait 11 weeks to get them back.
This book is interesting but I won't be the first person to say that the author clearly has a thing against transman for just existing and it's a bit much.

It's been too long. I need a glossary of names and what they did in the previous books. I'm quite lost

I'll admit it's been awhile since I read the first three books but these characters do not feel like the same people.

Tom Holt (KJ Parker) seems to always write about displacement, racism/xenophobia, gentrification, and colonization. But I continue to enjoy reading him complain. I've exclusively listened to his books on audio with the exception of this and orc on the wild side tho and omg it's so slow going. I might give up and do the audiobook for this one too honestly.

I started this book over a year ago. Maybe even two... Got two stressed out. I will probably finish it this year tho so I'm adding it.
