The descriptive writing in this story is so vivid and paints a beautiful understanding of the scene.

I love the concept of giving life to these portraits.

Obviously they’re inspired by real people, but the line, “At night, when the shop is closed, the faces in the portraits leave their frames, step inside the shop, mingle, talk about who and what they’ve see or overheard that day, share stories, and then return home by opening,” I found very poetic.

(Also reminded me of the portraits in Harry Potter lol)

I’m reading this for a book club, and even though I’ve only read the first chapter, I think it’s safe to say that I’m going to like this read a lot.

I can never seem to put the book down

This book is so nostalgic to me. No matter how old I am, I am always excited to pick it up and re read it.

I know he’s only in 6th grade, but I want to slap Ian silly

I like the way the authors has broken the book into sections of the school day

I wasn’t familiar with the story of Othello before this. I can see some parallels between the two - jealousy, envy, betrayal, love - but it does seem like this story has its own path.

Kids can be so mean

I liked his thoughts of isolated human worlds - like single planets - each embedded in individual cultures and customs, but all existing in the overall galaxy.

I keep telling myself that I need to put the book down and go to sleep, but I’m too invested now

I was wrong, I definitely like this book

THE BALCONY!!! IN THE RAIN!!

So cliché that you can’t help but love it.

This book it growing on me.

This book is very predictable, I feel like I don’t even need to keep reading and I’ll know what happens.

I like the book more than I was at the beginning.

Easy to visualize everything that’s going on and capture how the characters are feeling.

“What’s So Good About Men?”
… I’m asking myself the same question.

Ch. 6, Building Pyramids was WOW!
His discussions of the Imagined Order and the means of how we live - our desire for travel and new experiences and our modern ideals, all in the search for individualism, autonomy and “happiness” - were so interesting. Saying how the Imagined Order is inter-subjective and even if we think we as a person are “free”, we are still in the same prison as everyone else. 🤯

I can’t tell if I like this book or not. Some chapters I find myself really loving and others I’m bored and barely getting through - maybe it’s just cause I’m tired and am reading it before bed?? Who knows, will keep updating.

This book is a heavy digest. It shines the light on new ways of thinking and has given me new perspectives of how we are as humans.

Harari’s section on the cognitive revolution was fascinating - one line that stood out to me was “Homo sapiens look like an ecological serial killer.” It’s an interesting way to think of it but it’s true.

I’ve now started the agricultural revolution section of the book.
