hanya yanagihara is a source of evil but this book is absolutely beautiful

the formatting of this book pisses me off so bad and i’m frustrated because i love the content but why the ever-loving fuck am i about to embark on a 22-page chapter that is one unbroken paragraph… say sike!

second pynchon this year *gulp*

interested to see how this stacks up when compared to two titans of contemporary thrillers (sharp objects and gone girl), flynn’s prose is just as razor sharp but the mystery is definitely more of a slow burn

the only gillian flynn novel i haven’t read — thought it was apt for the fall seeing the satanic worship elements

chapter 5’s 40 pages tested my patience a little but in ways that kind of feels like pynchon’s point here — oedipa’s spiral into paranoia over perceived conspiracy that could or could not be hallucinatory is a lotttt and you kind of question the point, but i’m really along for the ride. love the dr. hilarius section in this chapter

I actually don’t think I’ve ever read a book quite like this? in many ways it seems pynchon intentionally wrote this to be confusing but in a way that feels fun to follow along with — you almost get swept up in the conspiracies and coincidences at play, as overwhelming as it can get. not to mention, the writing is incredibly witty and smart!

definitely going to be a book I have to let go and let God with but I’m excited to let pynchon’s words wash over me. so far I love the image of oedipa looking like a “beach ball with feet”

incredibly bleak. the sparse structure of the prose only contributes to the vast emptiness of the titular road. very fascinating so far!

plath’s writing is so unabashed and honest and obviously so influential in so many ways but i’m just doing this update to mention that this copy i’m reading from is a used copy i bought like 10 years ago (i’m just now reading it) and it was obviously annotated for school… this is maybe some of the funniest annotation work i’ve ever seen 😭
