The first chapter is a concise history of slavery in the West, beginning with white slaves in Europe and continuing on with the African slave trade and the particularly heinous version of racism that developed in that context. He describes the situation with the French sugarcane plantations on Hispaniola that was even more despicable than many stories told about the American South.

Right from the beginning this book is too heavy-handed and not really believable. Humans have developed interplanetary vessels but not a substitute for wood? They would still use sawmills? An interplanetary coalition would allow them to colonize an already inhabited planet. Yeah it’s an allegory for how people act on earth, I get it. I just think the details are short-sighted....

So fifteen pages in I can tell you that this woman is pretty crazy. Reading tidying magazines at age five? Okay, wow. But do I want a clean house? Yes I do. So I'm going to fucking take all this weirdo advice with a grain of salt and just do as much of it as I can because I'm about to move to a place half as big as my current apartment, and I really need to shed junk fast.

I can't stop reading it but the words are so beautiful sometimes I read pages two or three times. This is no surprise as I read the Roundhouse in a day. "She possessed, and so easily, a love most humans never know, yet are quite willing to die or go mad for."

Look I bought this at the Dollar Tree, OKAY? It's fine to read trash, it's research for work etc. Whatever.

Fascinating so far, reads almost like a fairy tale...
