The first chapter is a concise history of slavery in the West, beginning with white slaves in Europe and continuing on with the African slave trade and the particularly heinous version of racism that developed in that context. He describes the situation with the French sugarcane plantations on Hispaniola that was even more despicable than many stories told about the American South.
