Carmen Maria Machado’s footnotes are terrible. Her meta-narrative introduction was not yet interesting enough to be frustrating. Perhaps I’ll grow fondness as I read but I don’t see myself enjoying her edit. I do not like the art, I find it unecessary. However, the story so far on its own is atmospheric enough to ignore it. Hopefully I am not dragged out too much by the horrid format. If so I’ll read online.

Hesse is simple and fun to read, and in simple exposition and in simple dialogue, questions are raised to be answered like a sinking stone

Sometimes I have to reread sentences a few times to understand what comma denotes an appositive and what continues the sentence. Sometimes the pronouns blur together as a character thinks of another. Once I understand a sentence I am proud and content. Once I am better acclimated to the prose I will read in larger boluses, for now I really enjoy so far but do not have much stamina.

Do people read forewords? Anyway, really like. I can already tell the lack of quotation will annoy me at some point but is at others deeply intelligible, like thoughts and words spoken and what about them can only be communicated by an omniscient voice, not even that of the thinker themself because they themself are not aware of themself entirely wade into one. That was my attempt at a Woolf-style run-on sentence.

Faldum - Sure there is substance; themes and such. Sure I could think of a way to make my understanding of them into words. What lingers after a read is unintelligible. The same can be said for a movie, a painting, even a meal. Whatever nebulous term one may use - aura, vibe, atmosphere - is fitting. Hesse writes like an early Disney animation, it’s incredible.
