The writing is so awkward, oh my! I’m having a really hard time getting into this one, and not because the plot is uninteresting (it’s great so far!) but because the sentences and paragraphs are arranged so darn awkwardly.

You know those books, so precious and few-and-far-between, that you’d devour in a single sitting if they weren’t so blasted long and you weren’t such a blasted slow reader and they weren’t so blasted good you didn’t want them to end? This is definitely one of them.

"She rose, smiled goodbye, and said she would be coming back soon. She made her way to the sidewalk. Two solid hours and I didn't know where I was. I am so tired." Huh? Is there any particular reason why Miss Lee not only switched from third-person to first-person but also from past tense to present tense in a single paragraph? Does anyone understand this?

So, I know that a spaced ellipsis is technically correct, but I detest them. And, isn't there supposed to be a space between the end of the ellipsis and the word that comes after? Please, can we just nix Anna altogether? She's really driving me nuts. These characters are about as deep as a kiddy pool. Oh, and I'm pretty sure the word 'belly' didn't exist in the time of John of Patmos.

So, when did Sergeant Larimore change to Sergeant Lassiter? I was really quite confused for a moment, knowing for sure that they were talking about the Australian Sergeant, and swearing that his name had indeed been Larimore. Well, now it's Lassiter, I guess...

I'm so in love with this book. The characters, the narrating, the setting, all of it is just amazing. I can hardly contain myself!

So, Saba's language is very different. And her view of things is also very different. I don't know how else to describe it. It's definitely like something I haven't read in a while, but I'm not yet sure whether I like it or not.
