"The characters in my novels are my own unrealized possibilities. That is why I am equally fond of them all and equally horrified by them. Each one has crossed a border that I myself have circumvented."

Near the end. Will write a more thorough review. However while the book started off promising and pacing for this book has been fantastic, I am a little dispirited as to how the ending is turning out. With that said, this book has been great. It is not that it failed, it is still great, just feels like it might fall short of the gold standards previous books in this series have set.

The smallest of sympathies you might feel for Jōji quickly disappears. It is funny and painful to watch our protagonist suffers at the hands of innocent looking Naomi. From the outside it is easy to judge Jōji as a weak man (and he might very well be), but Jun'ichirō Tanizaki’s work is a reminder of how love, lust or attraction can be a powerful tool in making slaves out of men (and women).

Similar to ‘The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao’ by Junot Diaz, it adds power and depth to literature when the author writes using colloquial language. The road-man slangs add a layer of authenticity to a story that is common among underprivileged black men in England and especially London.

It's been a while since I read a book just for the story. Not for any underlining knowledge, not for a philosophical question, not to shed light on human nature but just to indulge and read for the sake of simple pleasure.

I am not ashamed to admit that so far, after every short story in this collection, I have had to look it up to gain more understanding. Borges is a smart and complicated writer and I am enjoying the challenge.

I am re-reading Americanah and for as much criticism that Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie as received about her (including by me), I have still enjoyed reading her work. Though some of the criticism aren’t without warrant, she is not succinct with her words, rather she explores by casting as many words as she feels necessary to convey a point. It is sometimes a task but a very rewarding task.

Kei Miller does not disappoint as a writer. Reading his book is like being excavator and discovering a culture as if it was your own. I feel like part of the Watergate community in Jamaica.
