The smallest of sympathies you might feel for Jōji quickly disappears. It is funny and painful to watch our protagonist suffers at the hands of innocent looking Naomi. From the outside it is easy to judge Jōji as a weak man (and he might very well be), but Jun'ichirō Tanizaki’s work is a reminder of how love, lust or attraction can be a powerful tool in making slaves out of men (and women).
