By my interpretation, the darkness Hill House is holding within, it holds because it is alive, and subject to the conditions of absolute reality, of which it concerns itself with and attempts to escape through dream. Dr. John Montague, a grandiose anthropologist drawn to the supernatural, wishes to explore and understand this withheld darkness, and has assembled a group to support him.
