Violence and sex, sex and violence. Why can these not be separated for Erika? The answer is the answer to many questions all at once: her mother. The abusive relationship has had an extremely psychologically detrimental effect on Erika, but try as she might to suppress it, the tortured excretions will make their way through her broken skin.

The storytelling is so beautiful and well-written that I keep forgetting this is a memoir!

I’ve been in a slump until I picked up this recent book and read this quote:

“And furthermore, I have in my head many projects that were begun and interrupted at various times… I simply shall not pursue them if the time remaining before my execution is not sufficient for their orderly conclusion. This is why …“ (Nabokov, 16).

The fucking greed of those in power is insatiable. So much humanity has been lost to it. To believe this book is almost a decade old but we’re still talking about the same shit is insane, but I’m not shocked.

I bought three new books today, borrowed five more from the library, and met someone interesting. In a bookshop, in passing, I will probably never see them again.
