Ngomong-ngomong, kayanya karakterisasi tokoh-tokohnya sangat kentara supaya pembaca bisa langsung ngebedain Laut gimana, Asmara gimana, Kinan gimana, dsb. Masing-masing punya sikap, hobi, dan kebiasaan yang berbeda-beda. We catet buat belajar xixixi.

Few final chapters utter my current worry and anxiety on what life would be like when my most beloved people leave. Reading this feels like a relief as well as a mistake at the same time. Also, the question Joni's mom if she ever forgave her past self for futures she didnt become is something I've been pondering.
Not a fan of Poston's writing style here. Still wanna read her other work.

The more I am digging in, the more similarities I find with Konoha. The trajectory of Rome from Republic, somewhat inclusive in its era, to Empire, extractive and narrow representation and allegedly strong coalition between King and nobles. Okay the chapters I read weren't all that but my mind is bugged by the messes happening in my country lols.
I cant wait for the next chapters to come.

Through stories of Venice and both Roman Republic and Empire, not only inclusive institutions are proven to be effective to stimulate growth, but also that our nation's fate is not set in stone. Even our own kin can bring us to our demise if they want to satisfy their ego and greed, no matter how peaceful and in-control the situation is. Inclusive can go extractive but also, vice versa. So, stay madly hopeful!

The latest 4 chapters truly hit home. A subtle what-if of someone seeing you raw and still choosing to be on your side. A loud confusion as one's mind is tangled with many problems which quick solutions can't be present. And when it has something to do with parents or one of them. But I can sense they all head toward an intersection where there can be one solution for all. I might be wrong.

1. More evidences showing extractive institutions being temporarily effective across era and nations (USSR, Kongo, Natufian, Maya).
2. It would become a vicious cycle where extractive people would try to gain control and continue till nothing was left any longer.
3. Yet in the end it was destructive for the nations in the long run coz productivity was stagnant as there's no proper incentives for people to work hard.

Misunderstanding yet fixed. But Joni's first love peeked in between her and Sebastian. It slowly began to shift to love-triangle, with Joni being so unwavering that she cant be with Sebastian. Hhhh

Different current state among nations could start with small differences in type of institutions they adopted, at one point of time negligible, but critical junctures amplified them. Added with contigent factors, the gap could either become smaller or even bigger relative to other nations. And they could improve or suffer continuously. I guess having a reasonable and respectable leader is one contingent factor. Alas.

The 2nd chapter debunked the theories known for explaining why some nations fail and some don't ; from the geography, culture, and ignorance. Those three are deemed unable to explain various cases. Hence alternative should be considered : that the failure of nation is the result of the political institution encouraged in the nations which affects the economics policy and later behavior.

Joni finally met the guy in her head when he visited her in her hometown. Turned out it's none other Sebastian Fell. Cant wait for how their dynamics will roll out. The story about her mother's situation is kinda depressing I deliberately refuse to read the parts seriously.

The book's theses : Interaction between political and economic institutions cause either a country's prosperity and poverty. Economic institution is pivotal in determining it, but political institution determines the economic instution in a country (the power parties or individual have, incentives, etc). In most of countries, both have existed since ages ago which shapes their current situations. Phew.

Okay now that Joni talks to a mysterious guy inside her head and accidentally meets her ex, things have started to get interesting. I think I can keep reading this book for the next several days.

I don't know if it's because I was reading half-asleep or anything, but I didn't enjoy any metaphorical descriptions through music or sound. It should have elevated the melancholic feeling of Joni but it's too much for me? Too sweet? Too romanticized? Luckily chapter 6 provided something I could look forward to. I hope I can have a good time with this book.

Going down historical lane of European conquests on America, highlighting the contrasts between Spain and England over each's areas conquered. Spanish successfully obtained abundant lands and manipulated the indigenous, while English only attained the area of no meaningful resource and skeptical chief of locals which pushed em from enslaving their kins to creating system that incentivized them to work hard.

First two chapters got me hooked initially since it's giving enemy-to-lover dynamics though I will know for sure when I am into more pages. But the next chapters seemed boring to me; character background-story and setting elaboration with some references of musicians or songs.

I'm reading this again from the preface. It sums up the objective of this book; showing why poor countries are poor and rich ones are rich. Hypothetically, it started from the political transformation which later decided the economic trajectory. This book will elaborate the type that works and doesn't, what makes it work, and other pre-requisites with evidences found in various studies of poor and rich countries.
