Ahhhhhh it’s soooooo good!!! Talk about compulsive reading!!!!!

So... expectation versus reality...

I was expecting something a bit On The Beach - esque. Like a terrible situation inflicted on really lovely people who just crack on, but with a lot of depth like OTB has, and characters with depth, and writing that makes you think... what I’m getting is more When The Wind Blows...

Please tell me the whole thing isn’t written in spoken word. I hate accents. I wouldn’t even be able to read my own.

So I’ve skipped the Mollie pages.... I think after this it’s time to go back to something nice... like a nice nevile Shute book

So I’m glad my suspicions about Nellie/Vanessa came out early and that wasn’t the entire plot twist. Def improving now

I’m fairly convinced Nellie and Vanessa are the same person at different times...

Part one out the way, and aside from the hard work of trying to understand some of the Indian words, it’s actually very beautiful...

This book is completely devoid of emotion

Example: ‘I need to get off the smack mum’
‘Anything I can do to help?’
‘I’ll just stay here write songs and go cold turkey’

I had the kindle sample, which made it look really good... this far it’s not really living up to expectations... The characters seem a little flat, likeable but still flat... I do care what happens to Pat/Trish, but it reads a bit bland.

When you skip 3 pages and have actually missed nothing at all.. it really says a lot 😱

I think I might have to abandon this...

Lots of spelling mistakes...

I love Shute... he doesn’t write about exceptional people or heroes, he writes about normal every day people who have exceptional circumstances thrust upon them. He writes about people who are the very epitome of ‘you don’t know what you’re capable of until you’re tested’ and I love that. He’s characters could be any one of us.

Struggling with this one... some parts seem really poetic and beautifully written... others just seem like the writer swallowed a thesaurus...

Ergh... now I’m confused. Part of me wants Tobias to go live with cecilia but for the fact that she’s a straight up narcissist... who probably shouldn’t have hamsters in her care let alone children...

Oh.... I should have kept reading before complaining it was a bit pathetic....

So her husbands gay and she used to do coke? That’s her big secret and why she’s acting like a straight up loon? She’s going all crazy cuz her dealers turned up dead and she’s looking after a kid that had something to do with her? Little over the top isn’t it. I thought there was going to be some great secret, not she used to do a bit of coke. Her and the rest of the upper echelons of society. My heart bleeds.

Well... I’m interested... Main character seems like a bit of a bitch tbh so not loving that...

Still don’t love it, but don’t hate it so violently now. Now we’ve got rid of most of the super irritating characters. I’m enjoying the historical aspect of it as i honestly never gave ‘the depression’ much thought before. The social injustice is interesting, and still relevant, but I’m not connecting with any characters at all, I hate all of them and their mundane conversations.

F*** me.... it’s like reading an episode of Beverly sodding hillbillies. Thus far, I hate every character. Someone gave me a spoiler that the grandparents die and I actually can’t wait for that to happen just so I don’t have to read about grandpas inability to button his pants anymore. They’re not even like real people, they’re like caricatures. I see this is going to be a hard slog....
