It’s clear that my favourite parts of books are the messiest.

Anywho: ‘perhaps he was not a true writer after all. He had read somewhere that, for true writers, nothing was more important than their art, not even love.’

CRAZY

When the truth came out, it didn’t feel like a bandaid being ripped off or like the rug pulled out from under my feet… it felt like coming round after being in a deep sleep. The question that I thought represented a dream somewhere in the middle of the book? Solved without ever being explicitly stated.

Adam is the stupidest, most selfish and almost entirely emotionally driven character I’ve seen written in a while.
There is one very obvious plothole at this point and many people would immediately think of more intelligent ways to think through and communicate such a revelation… but honestly his character’s flaws help to quickly explain them away.

Now this is messy.

I knew I left it in the build up to the war with scattered conflicts so I’m a little disorientated geography wise, but ultimately glad to finally be continuing it again.

I'll admit, I didn't pay as much attention to some of the details in this story because I initially didn't think I'd get through it (there were initially a lot of similarities to other fantasy books). Now I'm in deep and regret that - ha!

Discussion topics:
- Father / daughter relationship between Vin and Kelsier
- The various contrasts between Vin & Kelsier (skills, age, trauma, varying trust/ faith in people etc. etc.)
- 'Soothing' versus being a good conversationalist
- Jack of all trades (mistborn) vs. master of one (mistings)
- Logistics around a war; how much info the leader can openly disseminate without risking jeopardising the plan

This book is great to consume via audiobook after work, but is less fun to talk about than the other stuff I'm reading (largely because the concept was somewhat predictable as a fantasy book).

I'm getting there slowly but surely (my fault more than the book's).

I've found the sticking point
It's gotten to the interesting 'this is an impossible challenge' bit of the story

After a relocating - vacationing - starting a new job hiatus, I've actually restarted this from the beginning!

Very depressing, but thought provoking.

Kainene’s use of language makes her my favourite character, despite the otherwise boring situations we find her in.
Maybe that’s the point, to really highlight the contrast between her and her sister, particularly at this point in the book.

I’m sat on my massive suitcase, on a packed train while reading this. I can’t hide the horror of the imagery at this point.
I also despise Susan. This page is why.

Kainene: ‘And it’s wrong of you to think that love leaves room for nothing else. It’s possible to love something and still condescend to it.’

The candour in the writing is disarming.
That’s what strikes me first when reading it.

Sorry to ruin the suspense, but this will end up get 5 stars from me.

I’ve got to the conflicts bit and it’s really interesting
I can’t help but see similarities between yellows and people with ADHD and reds/blues and people with ASD.
And where the majority of people are greens, you can’t help but come back to the questions: ‘what is normal?’ And ‘who gets to decide what is and isn’t normal?’

From the very first descriptions of all these colours, I quickly proclaimed myself orange.
The book describes that as ‘red-yellow’… details.

‘This was love: a string of coincidences that gathered significance and became miracles’.

So far I REALLY love this book.
When you’re in a human heavy field, you pick up these ideas (often quite painfully). But I really think everyone should read this/ have an idea of these ideas. Really helps with open mindedness.

I started reading this during the holidays.
I’m glad I paid attention to the foreword because I thought ‘what an interesting concept’ without recognising the direct parallels in environment to the 1930s.

First highlight: ‘who hired all of these idiots?’

Gone through the intro to Adlerian philosophy and am now seeing its application in interpersonal relationships.

The layout was the first surprise but that’s what I get for not knowing what the book was about and making predictions anyway.

I think it’s at least somewhat true and useful in certain respects, but there are certainly things i disagree with.
