When you find out this is out and prioritise it over the other reads you’ve dragged out for weeks - months 😂

There’s a few scenes with Angelica and Tancredi where it’s essentially ‘aristocrat meets S&M’
I now understand where this book gets its name from and I was NOT expecting this

I knew this had to be set in a major city looking at rent prices alone. At least london introduces relatability.

I feel zero pity for Moody.
He’s not only dangerously similar to his mother, but also the ‘nice guy’ who deserves every inconvenience that comes his way x

‘The suspicion was taking an uncomfortable solid shape’

I understand how people can clear this book in one sitting.

A lovely sum up of the ignorance privilege comes with: ‘I would never have let myself get into that situation, she told herself. I would have made better choices along the way’.

It’s just v relatable.

Loving the fire metaphors repeatedly thrown in; I didn’t know there were so many processes, experiences and transitions that could be described with how fire moves.

The first real physical appearance of Izzy

Mia: ‘The thing about portraits is, you need to show people the way they want to be seen. And I prefer to show people as I see them so in the end I’d probably just frustrate us both.’

Such a good verbal summary of the differences between these mothers which probably foreshadows the impending conflict.

Loving the world building atm

This is a book about depression that captures the anhedonia more than anything else.

When I started this book I was trying to summarise the theme in one word/ phrase.
Initially, it was a book about problem-solving in a disaster…
…Then it was about feminism…
…Then it was about identity (or lack of sense of such)…
…Then it was about relationships (and potentially an LGBTQ one)
I’m still trying to get a hold on it.

Omg the pacing.
The generation of stress in a high acuity situation.
I’m hooked.
