Audiobook (track 24/58)
Gone through the intro to Adlerian philosophy and am now seeing its application in interpersonal relationships.

The layout was the first surprise but that’s what I get for not knowing what the book was about and making predictions anyway.

I think it’s at least somewhat true and useful in certain respects, but there are certainly things i disagree with.

This was an impressively slow start and entirely my own fault.
I read 3 or 4 other books purely because this is a paperback and didn’t want to carry/ potentially damage it.
But now it’s messy so I’m invested.

The humour in this book was exactly what I needed this week!

This isn’t a slow read, I’m just remarkably slow.
Time moves faster as a shift worker.

It's a great start and my sense of humour. It's on my phone which I'm so so grateful for because books are *not* fitting into my work bag!

I'm on a 'fishing for a good book' (as if I don't have a formalised list of loads of books I want to read) hiatus.

Fascinating how much more visceral my reactions to stories within this book have been compared to my memories of those for the first book.

I just love that billionaires use coupons at the supermarket too.

It's still predictable but at this point I like how the characters we're expecting slot into different roles within the family.
Fully expecting the stepbrothers to be wicked.
I also like how everyone around Christophe - including his very own daughter - has more sense than him. Maxine must be very hot (and financially irresponsible).

Now this is quite dry. The difficulty with representing a fairy tale without much of an exciting twist and then having a long message to your audience at the beginning pretty much detailing exactly which one it’s about is that we’re unsurprised. I’ve admittedly fallen asleep a couple of times.

One of the first times I've read a publication by an old colleague that's not been published in a scientific journal.
Having read a draft chapter I had (and still have) high expectations. So far, so good!

I was convinced that everyone needs to read this in the first half but the taste quickly sours; it just gets darker and more disturbing. Not less believable though.

‘Politeness is to human nature what warmth is to wax’

I like the historic-case-study layout of this book. Really good way to highlight clear patterns in human behaviours if not readily recognised/ learned elsewhere.

... so far it tracks.

The importance of making the choice to be kind. Even if it goes against what is conventionally cool and whether your family would be comfortable with it.

Why was it that the things that were closest were hardest to see?

The weather effect as a catalyst to love. At this point, it's a Jimenez feature.

I thought about how I wanted to reply. I decided on the truth.
This is now the third time and more of an internal dialogue and character indicator than an annoyance.

‘It had sounded like a good idea in theory but I think I overestimated my adaptability; I felt unmoored, like I was being tossed around on some choppy sea and all the captains of the passing boats were sneering at me instead of throwing me a lifeline’. - what beautiful visuals of anxiety (compounded with the feelings of lack of community).

'He was in the worst position to be generous, yet he was; and she was in the best position to show grace and she didn't and doing it would have cost her nothing and that was the fundamental difference between them.'

I'm at a conflict point and am groaning internally.

Things that resonated with me:
Friends - 'She loved them but she saw them for what they were'
Relationships - 'It wouldn't survive the scrutiny... and that was really it: it wouldn't survive the scrutiny, it wouldn't hold up under their inspection.'

My very cells exist for the convenience store.
Just wild.
The fact that she spoke of 'human me' versus 'animal me'.
At least she has a great sense of purpose.

She was like that man who was shouting at customers earlier in the book!

Shiraha's sister in law arrives.
'I want you to hide me' makes a LOT more sense now.
