- Too many characters to keep track of
- Writing a bit stilted at times, translation a bit too literal?
- Interesting insight into life in Oman & how it changed over 3 generations
- We are all slaves of life's circumstances, but life unfairly treats some much worse than others. Women, rich or poor have no agency, which suits some.
- Traditions and social expectations are the root of so much unhappiness.

An interesting premise but got boring after the first 100 pages or so. A common trend in Alain de Botton's books is that they seem to start off strongly and then just taper into nothingness. As if the author didn't have much more to say that was interesting, but was obliged to write 250 pages anyway. His trips are very 'vanilla' too.

What I've read so far could have been written in half the pages. The writing is overly verbose. In the first chapter I thought it was done on purpose, to create tension, and even then it was overdone. But it seems unnecessarily long and passages are the author's style.

I also find characters like Agnes tiring. Protagonists don't need to be somehow better, kinder, more sensitive, more special than everyone else.

Interesting concept, and started off with some interesting musings. But the book has become less interesting as it has dragged on...

Andrea is on page 86 of 165 of Man's Search for Meaning
The author presents his ideas in a way that does not resonate with me and he contradicts himself. He says that man should try to maintain his dignity, but earlier in the book says that those who were good did not make it out alive. He says you should let life take its course but how can you guess that?! That we need hope for the future but when hope is shattered, prisoners died 🤷🏻‍♀️

Andrea is on page 29 of 46 of On the Unhappiness of Being Greek
As someone who is not Greek, it is difficult for me to say how accurate this book is. However I can recognise it for what it is: a reflection of the love/hate relationship that the author has with his country. The sort of relationship that may feel familiar to many. So many of the statements he makes, could just have easily been made about my country - coincidentally (or not?) also Mediterranean.
