Trav took my face in his hands and kissed me. And I mean, really kissed me. The intensity took me by surprise, the way he held my face to his, how he tasted me, the passion, the need, the goodbye.

He held my face in both hands, and his eyes were closed, his lips barely moved against mine in an almost kiss. He nudged my nose with his, making my knees go weak, and I chuckled. “It still gets me,” I whispered.

Me too, love. Me too. :D

He made me lose myself. With every thrust, with every groan, he made the world disappear, he made everything but us disappear. He made me his.

I wanted Travis to have me, to take me, to make me his. I wanted to give him what he gave me, and I wanted him to know I belonged only to him.

I picked up Nugget and touched his nose to mine. “You don’t need me to feed you, okay?”

His eyes softened and he sighed. “Just when I think I got you all figured out…”
I laughed quietly. “I really do love you. You got that figured out, yeah?”
“Yeah,” he whispered. Travis finally smiled, and he lightly scratched the fidgeting wombat in my arms.

‘You must be very proud of your son,’ the interviewer prompted. Charles Sutton answered with one resounding word. ‘Very.‘

Ugh. Charlie could have benefited from hearing that sooner.

I fell back on the soft, soft cloud-like doona, and Travis grinned as he grabbed my jeans at my ankles and pulled them off me. Then he proceeded to nudge his nose up every inch of my body, followed by a scruffy chin and soft lips.

I looked down at the little guy in my arms, all wrapped up in a woollen beanie and my old sweater—the same sweater Travis had kept Matilda in.

I cannot deal with this. Awwww!!

As soon as the little bugger was in my arms, he settled, and as soon as I put the bottle teat near his mouth, he fed like he was starving. I shook my head. Someone laughed.

First Matilda, now Nugget... So goddamn cute!

“I owe you something big.”
“Big as in eight inches?” he asked. “Or big as in a pizza oven or a week in Kakadu?”

“Do that again,” I whispered with my eyes closed.
“What? This?” he asked, softly nudgin’ his nose to mine.
I smiled at the butterflies it gave me. “That’s the best thing ever.”

“And it’s not that it’s just because I ‘came out’,” I said, using air quotes. “I think it’s because I’m not ashamed. I always figured if the local farming community knew I was gay, it’d be something to apologise for.” I shook my head and suddenly found the steering wheel interesting, looking at it instead of him. “But I’m kinda proud of who you let me be.”

Nothing left to say, except *big-ass grin*.

”I tell her that Travis is a good fella. I told her that my cousin Nara was in a bad place, but she is now safe at Sutton Station, and how Travis show her how to make garden and teach her like our people, how to be good to the land.”

Billy, let me love you.

“Do you know what the odds are that I would ever find someone? I live and work in the middle of the desert, and he gets on a plane from the other side of the planet and arrives at my doorstep.” I took a shaky breath. “The most perfect guy, and for some reason I will never understand, he chose me. I’ll tell you what the odds are.” I raised my pointer finger. “One. One chance in a lifetime. That’s all I get.”

“I am a fucking nancy boy. And I can still run a better farm than any of you. But if you wanna sit here like a bunch of old women and talk about sex lives, then I’m all for it,” I said, lifting my chin, looking at Jack Melville. I sneered at him. “Let’s start with yours. You married? You been married for what? Forty years? You still enjoy a good old romp in the bedroom? I bet you’re a missionary man [...]“

We rocked back and forth, always kissing. And on the cold, cold ground by the flickering warmth of the fire, we made love. The way he held me, the way he looked at me, it was the closest to heaven I’d ever get without dyin’.


...and N.R. Walker delivers it all masterfully. I am in awe.

He wrapped his arms around me and buried his face into my neck, and for the longest time he didn’t move. It was like he had three days’ worth of hugging to catch up on, or maybe he was trying to compensate for the next-however-long in case he did actually have to leave.

Stop it. Stop it right now. Travis isn't going anywhere, remember?

He grinned, because he fucking won, and when he walked over to my horse, she near nudged him off his feet. “See?” I called out from the Rover. “She’s not happy about it either.”
Travis swung himself up into my saddle and gave Shelby a pat on the neck. “She loves me.”
I was too busy glarin’ at Travis, and kind of forgot the others were still there. They found something funny, all trying not to smile [...]

He didn’t say any actual words, but his smile and his eyes said something that looked a lot like “you’re so awesome and I love you.”
To which I answered, “I love you too .” I didn’t really mean to say those words out loud.

And I love you both! ❤

He took a deep breath of the cold morning air and sat higher in his saddle. “This is what’s it’s about, right here. Open desert, flat to the horizon, blue sky, red dirt and you.”
I grinned at him. “I was just thinkin’ the same thing.”

“I mean it, Trav. We will sort this mess out,” I told him softly, confidently. “Like I told you before, if you leave here, it will be because I’m impossible and infuriating and you can’t stand to be near me one more minute. Not because some arsewipe in a suit sitting in some city skyscraper gets to tick some boxes on his to-do list.”

I love this side of Charlie, and I'm happy he finally got to this point.

“’S’okay, Mr Travis,” Billy said, wearing his usual half-face grin. “I can hide you. If someone comes lookin’ for you, you come with me. Ain’t nobody find you. Not even a Tracker’ll find you.”
Travis looked at him seriously. “Would I still be alive?“

Hahaha. Billy is awesome!

“Yeah.” He groaned as he stood up and gave me a full frontal view of his morning wood as he readjusted the blanket around him.
“Jesus.”
