This is bad. Haha.

The parallels between real world populations to the fantastical world are almost so jarring that it pulls you out of the story, The Ashkar/Jewish references hit heavy with the current political climate, and the random Russian, Korean, Chinese and various other naming conventions thrown all into one small local are hard to follow and have me more concerned with trying to figure out which culture she's paralleling.

Chapters 1-10 for book club. So many theories already. All the secrets!

I'm enjoying this more than I expected, sans some of the inside of Violet's head.

I suppose it's finally time to hate read this before the third book comes out.

This is EXCELLENT so far. Another amazing stand alone from ML Wang, can't wait to see how it concludes.

The plot itself is ... fine, but wow this should have gone through at least 2 more passes with an editor. Wrong she/he used multiple times, unclear responses in the dialogue make it hard to decipher who is actually speaking. Conversations are awkward, the writing style is akin to a middle grade story. I'm pretty sad, this story had potential but unless I'm wowed in the last 30%, this one is falling EXTREMELY flat.

This is potentially going to be a DNF. The clashing of fantasy world and modern vernacular combined with characters that speak like gen z is really grating. I knew I shouldn't trust this rec, haha.

Asha is a giant douche. Literally 0% likeable about her so far.

Welp, just realized this is the author that usually co-authors with Jay Kristoff. Suddenly the only POC queer character in the book being the SURPRISE! bad guy makes more sense. This is quickly approaching DNF status. Gross.

I am having a really hard time getting in to this. It had absolute stellar reviews from friends and readers opinions I value and respect but yikes. I don’t know if it’s coming off of reading Anastasia but the narrator is just not jiving with me so far.

I don’t think I like the 4th wall breaks and “wit” by the narrator. It seems this is attempting to be a cross between middle school and YA and I’m not sure I care for it.

The story itself is entrancing and the artwork though. 😍😍💖

If this asshole doesn’t stop choking out a woman that has LITERALLY BEEN CHOKED TO DEATH AND BURIED IN A SHALLOW GRAVE for sexual pleasure because he gets off on it I am done. Holy fucking shit. I liked the zodiac academy by these authors but they’ve gone too far with this series. Fucking gross.

Sigh. Powering through. More recycled plot arcs ... similar characters (I’m calling this ones death now). Just really disappointed after loving her first two series.
