A very grisly opening. This might not be for me. I like being spooked, not sickened. If the gorefest continues, I'll have to jump ship.

Might take me a while to get through this one. The prose is fine, but the plot progression is a bit vague and confusing. I don't feel pulled in yet.

Loving this so far -- the character dynamics; the evocative writing. If Rice is aiming for a neogothic feel, he's hitting the newel post on the head!

DNF. Made it to roughly 12% and couldn't force myself to continue. Just couldn't. ALWAYS read a sample before you buy a book.

I'm sorry to be a party-pooper, but this story is a perfect example of why writers need editors. Not sure I can struggle through all the grammatical, syntactical, and punctuation errors. They're making my reading experience truly painful. And it's a shame, given the imaginative premise. :-(

The descriptions are getting ever nore tiresome; the mood, ever more dismal; the wicked aunt, still cold, calculating, and cruel. I see the writing on the wall and am not sure I can continue to follow the passive heroine to her doom.

Nothing is happening. The descriptions are getting tiresome. I'm only reading it to see what revelations the clairvoyant girl will come up with.

Regretfully putting this aside. Can't get into it. Could be too YA-ish for me.

Is leaving me cold. I'm having trouble connecting with the characters. Stylistically, this could be *too* YA-ish for me.

Sad to say, my initial enthusiasm has evaporated. Right after my first two updates, the brutality started. And didn't stop. I know some readers don't mind continuous, explicit violence, but I do. Was hoping for supernatural chills instead of all this gore. I'm not even sure what the story's about anymore. :(

Pretty enjoyable so far. But, uh-oh, I ran into some Tarzanisms: "Is good. Want you. Need this." Why does lust make pronouns anathema to m/m romance heroes?

Not only a compelling true story, but a fascinating look at American life in the mid 1940s and the history of circus culture in the U.S.

Brilliant! Love the world and the the story. So far, I've only a couple of character nits to pick, but if everything resolves satisfactorily, they won't influence my overall impression.

Oh boy. The dialogue tags are already driving me crazy. A good editor would've eliminated or at least flagged them as being silly, inappropriate, and/or wholly unnecessary.

The dialogue is boring me to tears too. I'm hoping that once the older characters' uptightness and intellectual snootiness is established, the pace of this book will pick up. The print is painfully tiny, and I'm rapidly losing patience.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this gay-by-gaslight nod to the Cthulhu mythos. (Was it Miskatonic University that Whyborne attended in Arkham? :))

God, this is boring. BO-RING! And I've found even more irritants. Senator Peter Ryman. With blue eyes. From Wisconsin. Really? And there is no such thing as a "Wisconsin accent." And we don't have ranches here. And a tractor pull is an event, not a piece of equipment. Maybe, Ms. Grant, you didn't do such a great job with your research -- except to stumble upon a Wisconsin politician named Paul Ryan.

I am getting very, VERY bored & already regret having bought this book. Meticulous world-building but waaaay too much of it. There's been no dramatic tension, no zombie thrills and chills for countless pages. One sprawling info dump after another hardly makes for a compelling read. I get it that you did your homework, Ms. Grant, but enough is enough already!
