Wow, this book is amazing. It should win the Newbery IMO. In addition to being a powerful response to the Little House books, it is a masterfully written piece of literature. The story is engaging and earnest, the characters well drawn, and simple yet complex in the way where I feel children will devour it and ask for more.

I spent ALL DAY reading this yesterday. I like that it doesn't just continue the story as it gets more complicated, it also shows the character's development clearly and her struggle to understand that no group is all good or all bad.
