28% in and I'm struggling. There is abuse of animals & children, neglect, and more, which I can handle if it is written with care and serves a purpose in the story. I think the writing is good, but this author clearly hates fat people. Mrs. Bittlemore is described as grotesque, fat, having sausage-fingers & constantly knocking into things. She is the only character whose physical appearance is repeatedly described.

I am trying to stick this one out, but I have contemplated DNFing it numerous times already. I don’t mind unlikable characters, but I feel distant from all of them even though they are each interesting.
