Gregsamsa is on page 21 of 336 of The Guilt Project: Rape, Morality and Law
'There may be more people willing to report being raped, but there are also more behaviors classified as rape, more ways to become a rapist or molester than ever before. We think we're surrounded, but we've surrounded ourselves.'

Of retention and evacuation, there be divers kinds, which are either concomitant, assisting, or sole causes many times of melancholy.... In the first rank of these, I may well reckon up costiveness, and keeping in of our ordinary excrements, which as it often causeth other diseases, so this of melancholy in particular."

Shame how this book seems like it could be insightful if it weren't for all the Freudian Oedipal and castrationy stuff, but that's like saying someone could be a good person if we could just remove their heart.

This is a reread, cuz of a brief exchange on horror I had with our Samadrita, and cuz recently a friend asked me what it's about and my memory only allowed indistinct mumbling about OtherNess.

Since I've been on here a year and a half, I guess I should stop acting like a GR noob. I clicked on "my followers" (very uncomfortable with that phrase) for the first time, to see a bunch of people I'm following. I think we should just be friends, but I don't mean that in that sickly end-of-a-romance way.

Dale Peck is a brainless bitch who doesn't even finish books he's been paid to review so should weep less at the presence of the tiny avant-garde who dwarf him, and instead decry the thousand YA authors who also do so.

Another book reminding me of how pathetically ignorant I am of music. Such smoothly splendid sentences, though.

Gregsamsa is reading The Narrow Road to the Deep North
Mmmmmyay. Just got this today, the first Friday night in a while I've had to myself. Damp chilly weather outside, warm jammies fresh from the dryer inside, cappuccino machine fired up, and the latest from one of my fave authors. Nothin better! (Despite the tedious annoyance of having clicked on a similar title and having no way to undo it).

HOORAYYYYY!! Of course there are those who won't see this as a validation of an underappreciated author (Gawd I've been pimping GOULD'S for years) but as a scare note signalling corporate acceptance or an evil wrong-gender stab to make up for Mantel... I haven't read this, but if he's sustained a tenth of his jaw dropping talent I tingle all over in anticipation.

Gregsamsa is 90% done with On the Sublime
We should take a lesson from nature, who when she planned the human frame did not set our grosser parts, or the ducts for purging the body, in our face, but as far as she could concealed them, 'diverting,' as Xenophon says, 'those canals as far as possible from our senses,' and thus shunning in any part to mar the beauty of the whole creature.

In other words, don't be an ass-face.

The most impressive thing so far: the gymnastics Longi executes in order to make tautologies look like something else. Do you know how you can tell when something's sublime? When it's sublime.
