I don't usually post updates, but I need to put this somewhere so I remember it later: I'm occasionally moved, repulsed, disappointed, fascinated, awed, and in tears all by one nonfiction book. Truly wonderful narrative nonfiction about an awful disease, its history, and the human connection to and around it.

A few irritations: Why, if this is set in a fictional world, is there French?
EVERY description of a new person includes skin color and their clothing. I get it. It's a diverse society.
Many things are predictable; is that because I read a lot of YA fantasy, or the book?

It's not all bad!
Great world-building.
The important characters aren't flat, at least not "really"... Can't spoil and elaborate.
Intriguing.
