Isabel Allende is a frustrating author. The problem with “Daughter of Fortune” is, I’m having a devilishly hard time caring about any of these characters. It’s not clear why I should follow their adventures, their tales of heartbreak, their determination to make the best of a new start in the America’s. I don’t know whether I’ll even read this one to the end.

Very dynamic prose and an engaging lead character. I definitely see the parallels with "Neuromancer," a book that puzzled me a bit, back in the mid-90s, and which I classified as "electronic poetry." Will have to re-read Gibson, incidentally. Of course, everyone else has commented on Stross' idea-a-paragraph-type imagination.

The second third of the book is distinctly slower than the first, although the breadth of the author's interests remains astonishing.
