1/3 of the way through and to my shame and edification I've had look up a lot of sci-fi references. Each of the previous books had this, but book 4 turns it up a notch. From Lewis Carroll's Snark Hunt to the Audible only Expeditionary Force to TV's Andromeda, there are century spanning references.

BTW I now think Douglas Adam's got 42 from the preface to Carroll's Snark Hunt and Rule 42.
