Can't pinpoint whether the book has gotten materially better in the past 100 pages or if I'm just on its wavelength now... It works much better as a character study than a commentary on European power struggles in the early 1900s; in trying to be both in equal parts it shoots itself in the foot.

This is a very tough book to get back into after not having read it for a few days. I'm losing the thread of family lines and historical events...

The main character's daughter, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter are all named Isabel. Why make it needlessly more difficult to understand the book you're writing??

As a philosophical and political exercise, I love this book. The actual words on the page, somewhat less so.
