More new POV characters going into Chapter 11. It is truly a strange choice after the first six chapters featured Merrick as the POV character.

I don't love the choice of introducing a new point of view character 6 chapters into the book. It's a bit jarring since the POV had been completely with Merrick outside of the prologue.

I feel bad saying this, but I don't feel Brian McClellan has done a good job setting the stakes of this story. I'm not invested in the characters, the situation, or the abilities of the world. This all feels derivative of his earlier work and Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy. I know it's early on still, but I feel like I could walk away from this book without giving it another thought.
