It took a while, but I finally got into this. There are still some parts I don't love, but that's ok.

I feel bad saying this, but I don't feel Brian McClellan has done a good job setting the stakes of this story. I'm not invested in the characters, the situation, or the abilities of the world. This all feels derivative of his earlier work and Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy. I know it's early on still, but I feel like I could walk away from this book without giving it another thought.
