I just love how Steinbeck writes, but I can't really imagine where this book is going story-wise. "Grapes of Wrath" had a very distinct historical setting, the great dust bowl, but here I'm not so sure.

I started this once before but it was honestly a too huge book to lend from the library - I'm expecting this will at least take me a month to read.


I love how Steinbeck describes things. Almost makes you nostalgic for a time before technology and cities and death of all things natural. In Austria you can't even go hiking without hearing a car somewhere in the distance.

I gotta say so far by far my favourite Hesse book but man, is it upsetting :(

I think I might have a dislike for reading Hesse because I have to Google more German words than I'm comfortable with 😂

This is such a strange book - I always find it more fun reading books without knowing anything about the plot but I think I should at least look up the genre because I'm still really confused.


I think it falls under the category sci-fi but then again it doesn't really have anything too outlandish.

The utter disappointment when you Google a song in a book and realise it's just fictional ☹️


Also I still have no idea what's going on this book. It reads like some alternate reality/sci-fi'esque thing but at the same time it might just be some weird cult. No clue honestly.

Mistakenly took this book with me, because apparently owning two books with orange covers is too much for my brain.


I honestly don't have a clue what's going on in this book. All I know that it's supposedly super upsetting. I'm scared 😂

It's super interesting how AIDS intersects here with cancer research - the astonishingly fast way AIDS went on killing people, there was a sudden demand for quicker drug trials. People actively dying didn't want to wait for some randomized blind study to be done.


Also.. wow this book is long. I'm still in the 80s... 100 pages less would've probably been fine 😅
