Plato is so far winning every imaginary argument. It's like watching a Sorkin show.

Newcastle is starting The Republic
It took me quite a while just to get through the introduction, but it was written in a very enjoyable style so I didn't mind as much.

For this book it was pretty helpful to have a general idea when this was written and why. So apparently Plato was 50 when he wrote his Republic/Constitution and it was an open criticism of how Athen was ruled at the time. Apparently this was pretty controversial.

Russell might as well be writing straight gibberish with how much I understand this book. It's way too short and tries to summarize philosophical ideas but in a way where you should've probably read some of these works of thought.

Not to mention you have to trust Russell's interpretation of things which apparently wasn't always exactly right

Not sure I'll finish this.

I hate whoever recommended this book to me, philosophy has to start somewhere but do we really have to talk about whether a table exists? Or how we can even dare to assume that the sun will rise tomorrow?

That's just arguing for the sake of argument.

Whoever whishes to become a philosopher must learn not to be frightened by absurdities.

This book is surprisingly disturbing. It starts of like a simple family saga but pretty soon it turns violent and somehow it doesn't stop. There's always something unsettling happening that keeps you wary - wary of people in the book - wary of any happiness.

Meanwhile Steinbeck's writing is so good that you almost forget how awful his world is.
