The village street was choked with cars, from Oxford, Wiltshire, London, and their lights gave a strange air of wakefulness and dreamlike excitement to the scene. This was intensified as they drew near the gate under the ilex trees, lurid lights from orange-coloured lamps filled the huge oblong windows of the Leepers’ house, inside which figures circled silently like the inmates of an aquarium.
