Look up the Chamberlain-Kahn Act of 1918. Under this law, women were imprisoned in reform institutions for perceived independence, being outspoken, unmarried, or because their husbands said they should be. Sickening.

The reform institutions of the early 20th century are shocking, along with the attitudes of those who were convinced that harsh discipline would “reform “ those of whom they disapproved.

I never had a sense of how vast Australia is.

Elizabeth is a smart, hard-working, dutiful young woman in the ‘60’s, despite the growing rebellion in society all around her - until she isn’t. The reader knows heartache and trouble are coming.

This story takes place after the Depression and WWII, with families who are scarred by those hard years. Women’s ambitions conflict w their lack of property rights, as friends Peggy and Cassie come of age.

Appalachia never fails. I like this very much already.

I stayed up too late reading this one. Hard to put down!

So good! Not your typical Amish story. This is about a girl w ADHD. Can’t wait to get back to listening!
