I read one of the reviews about when you start this book to set aside time cos all you’ll want to do is keeping reading and oh my goodness it’s so true. The setting of the army base hospital has me dripped.

This book absolutely pulls you in!

Another view from the dog. A new character of a nosey neighbour. Continuing to read to see the good part of the book.

It’s a strange writing style. We get the dog’s perspective at times. Trying to stick with it because so many good reviews.

From the beginning of the book until now we are now onto the fourth generation.

Noa has found out Hansu is his dad. However it’s been mentioned Hansu is a gangster. I hope that Noa doesn’t follow in his dad’s footsteps.

I don’t think we’ve saw the last of Kim. I think he was traveling to Korea. Kim works/worked for Hansu.

Yoseb is still not well. He gave Kim his blessing to remarry his wife when he was gone. However his partner couldn’t speak of this whilst her husband was alive. Leaving Kim to leave the house and head on his travels.

Going to university as an investment is true. As Yoseb had suggested he could even head to America to work.

Noa got accepted into Weseda. A great university in Tokyo. Sunja wanted to borrow the money from Hansu - however this is not a loan. He wanted to do this for his son. This means that Noa gets tuition paid alongside an apartment. The family see Noa going to university as an investment.

Reading on my break at work. New job for Mozasu - pachinko parlour

I guess pachinko means do you continue to play the game to win more cash or do you walk away with the small sum ensuring you don’t go bankrupt. Or in turn do you just make no risks at all and not play the game.

The book mentions the word pachinko. I had to look up online so it’s like a game machine. A loophole around gambling.

I see they want to make the boys have a better education. Hansu trying to convince Sunja he can help and that is what Isak her late husband would also want. Which is true enough

Hansu found Yoseb and also brought him to the farm to be with the family. Then the family return to where they once were before the war to remake a new house with the help of Hansu. Everyone is back in the same neighbourhood but a much better house.

I can’t help but see Hansu as this miracle worker for the family. He watched over Sunja all these years from afar. Then he makes sure they are safe from the war. When he brought Sunja’s mother to the farm, was so sweet.

Then she sold the pocket watch, who they wondered if stolen or not. My thoughts are Hansa finds this pocket watch. However as the book progresses he too will be getting older.

I am enjoying reading of the references in the book. How white rice is a delicacy. It’s not had all the time. The mum makes before Isak and Sunja leave. Then they have again when they get to Japan.
